Egg production at the farm, María’s first entrepreneurial project, created in partnership with her father to complement the products they sell to the schools. The National School Feeding Law (LAE) in Guatemala requires schools to allocate 70% of their School Feeding Program (PAE) funds to purchase fresh products from local suppliers, thus promoting healthy eating for students while strengthening the family farming and livestock economy. Bonifacio Urbano Barrera Acabal, a farmer from Xequemeyá, Momostenango, along with his daughter María Luisa Berrera Hernández, has developed a successful model of family farming that supplies 25 schools through the School Feeding Program. Through his involvement in programs like SEGAMIL, Nuestra Cosecha, and Learning for Life, they strengthened their production and built a community collection center. María Luisa, 18, started her own egg farm on the family land, delivering eggs weekly to schools and showing strong youth leadership and business vision. This family effort has created local jobs, boosted the community economy, and offered an alternative to migration, proving that unity and family commitment can transform lives and communities.
