Summary of assessment of African Indigenous Leafy Vegetables (AILVs) in eastern Zambia
This 2-page handout summarizes the findings of an assessment carried out by a combined team of CRS and staff from USAID's Feed the Future Mawa Project in Chipata and Lundazi, in Eastern Province, Zambia. The goal was to assess consumption of African Indigenous Leafy Vegetables (AILVs) and make recommendations for future project activities. The assessment was carried out through focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and market vendor interviews. The qualitative methods were followed by visits to fields and gardens to photograph the plants and purchase plant bundles from market vendors. Scientific names were identified using local flora and through a literature review, and were matched with documented nutritional properties of each species. A similar assessment was carried out in southern Malawi.
