The AIDSRelief Zambia Partnership

Transitioning to the Churches Health Association of Zambia

From 2004 to 2013, the CRS-led AIDSRelief project supported rapid scale up of HIV care and treatment for 700,000 people in ten countries, including Zambia. Sustainability was a key component of the original project design, which incorporated a vision for eventual local ownership of the care and treatment programs. AIDSRelief Zambia provided technical assistance and capacity strengthening to 19 health facilities and 111 satellite clinics across the country to ensure high-quality clinical HIV services.

CRS developed this document to highlight project lessons and successes—particularly in the areas of capacity strengthening, partnership, and transition—and to make relevant information available to others seeking adaptable or replicable strategies. This document focuses on how AIDSRelief and one partner, the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ), developed a powerful partnership and worked through a well-established transition framework to enhance CHAZ’s capacity to support treatment sites without additional support.
