BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, Nov. 14, 2024 – During the annual meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), one new board member was elected to Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) Board of Directors, and one board member was re-elected. They will join two non-episcopal members elected by the Board of Directors in June.

Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala was elected to serve a three-year term for CRS beginning in January. Since December 2022, he has served as an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Washington and is the first Central American to serve as bishop in the United States. Bishop Donald Hying of Madison, WI was also elected to a second term.

“We are thrilled to have Bishop Menjivar join our Board of Directors,” said Sean Callahan, CRS’ president & CEO. “As the humanitarian needs of millions around the world increase, we are sure that Bishop Menjivar’s voice will help guide CRS in our effort to serve our sisters and brothers overseas. We are also thankful that Bishop Hying is returning for a second term. His guidance and insights have been invaluable, and we know he will continue to serve the board with distinction.”

Joining Bishops Menjivar and Hying on the board are Mr. Adrian Coppel and Ms. Jackie Daylor, elected by the Board of Directors earlier this year as non-episcopal directors. Their terms will also begin in January.

CRS is thankful to three members who are ending their service on the Board of Directors: Bishop Oscar Solis of Salt Lake City, UT, Mr. Brian Wenger, and Ms. Geraldine Carolan, who was the first woman to be elected vice chair for the Board of Directors and will continue her service on the CRS Foundation Board.

“Throughout their terms on our board, Bishop Solis, Mr. Wenger and Ms. Carolan have had a deep impact on CRS,” Callahan said. “We are grateful for their dedication to the organization, their adherence to Catholic principles, and their commitment to being a voice for those who are too often unheard.”
