BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, Jan. 14, 2020 – Bill O’Keefe, executive vice president for Mission, Mobilization and Advocacy at Catholic Relief Services (CRS), issued the following statement in response to the current administration’s rescissions package.
“We strongly oppose the current administration’s proposal to withdraw already allocated international assistance, which includes life-saving humanitarian aid. COVID-19 threatens jobs, food systems and the social safety net in nearly every corner of the globe. We cannot turn our backs on our brothers and sisters in need. Poverty-reducing assistance to marginalized communities is not only a moral imperative but also in our nation’s best interest.
We call on Congress to reject the rescissions package, and to affirm support for principled U.S. global leadership. Further, we urge the incoming administration to recall the rescissions package. Doing so ensures that Congressionally appropriated funds, meant to reduce suffering, lessen poverty and promote stability, are spent as intended.”
