BALTIMORE, MD, December 21, 2018 – Catholic Relief Services (CRS) commends Congress for reauthorizing legislation that will continue to help protect the world’s more than 21 million victims of human trafficking.

“Pope Francis has called human trafficking modern day slavery and a crime against humanity,” said Bill O’Keefe, CRS’ vice president for Government Relations and Advocacy. “We applaud Congress’ steadfast commitment to lead global anti-trafficking efforts.”

Led by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), the Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Reauthorization Act reauthorizes the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 through fiscal year 2021. Passage of the bill means that the United States will continue to protect victims of human trafficking; to prosecute perpetrators of trafficking; and to support programs that prevent trafficking. In addition, the bill directs the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to incorporate strategies to reduce the risk of trafficking in the countries where the United States government funds development programs. What’s more, the bill directs the U.S. State Department to report to Congress efforts to combat trafficking in post-conflict or post-disaster areas.

“With a growing number of human trafficking victims worldwide, we still have a lot of work left to do, but this bill is a great step in the right direction.”
