BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, March 17, 2023 –  Bill O’Keefe, executive vice president of Mission, Mobilization and Advocacy at Catholic Relief Services (CRS), issued the following statement in response to the Biden Administration’s FY24 federal budget proposal.

“We are pleased the Biden Administration’s budget proposal includes increases to humanitarian assistance, food aid, and climate finance at a time when needs are far outpacing resources in many of the countries where we work. The Administration clearly sees the urgency in supporting communities in crisis while also acknowledging that complex challenges take time and sustained commitment to tackle. For those of us on the frontlines of global humanitarian crises, the impacts of climate change are particularly concerning—especially in places like the Sahel and Somalia that are suffering through historic drought. Increases in development and humanitarian assistance would undoubtedly save millions of lives.

Now that the Administration has done its part, it is time for Congress to go to work to pass appropriations that similarly prioritize the needs of the world’s most vulnerable people—a move that will strengthen U.S. leadership abroad.”
