LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF L’UNAD-CARITAS CHAD ON THE 70TH ANNIVERARY OF CRS IN THE WORLD

Dear CRS partners,

It is an immense joy for us at l’UNAD-Caritas Chad to join with you to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the creation of CRS in the world. It was in 1943 that the US Catholic Bishops created CRS as a branch of Caritas International to aid the survivors of World War II. Since then CRS has extended its assistance to more than 100 million poor people in the world in 91 countries including our cherished country, Chad, beginning in 1984-1985 following the extended drought and famine that affected tens of thousands of victims throughout the country.

CRS in Chad has implemented in a concrete manner for the last 30 years its mission to help the poorest and most disadvantaged by working in the spirit of Catholic Social Teaching for the promotion of the sacredness of life and the dignity of the human person.

CRS in Chad supports the local Catholic Church in its mission of the deepening of the Catholic faith by assisting those who suffer without regards to race and religion.

The mission of CRS in Chad, like that of Caritas of Chad, is motivated by the example of Jesus Christ who asks us to ease the suffering of the most destitute, to support development and to strive for charity and justice in our dear country which has suffered too much from the ravages of civil war during more than 40 years by strongly supporting the entire Episcopal Conference in Chad to implement Justice and Peace Commission in all its dioceses.

This solidarity of CRS in Chad has mobilized from 1997 until now more than $25,410,139 – almost 13 million CFA – which is invested primarily in the domains of Emergency Food Aid, Food Security and Microfinance, in HIV-AIDS and in the consolidation of social peace through the Justice and Peace Commissions.

Our strongest wish is to see CRS continue to favorably support the works of Caritas Chad to allow it to continue its plan in the coming decades because currently, the challenges are many and the local Caritas alone is not able to assume the immense task of overcoming poverty, disease, and misery in Chad.

In my own name, and in the names of the 8 directors of the Caritas dioceses of Chad, I give my best wishes for the 70 years of CRS to the service of humanity which Jesus, the first director of Caritas, served and has been serving for more than 2000 years.

Félix Mbete
The Director of L’UNAD-Caritas Chad
