Iraq Crisis

Since January of 2014, escalating violence in northern and central Iraq has caused devastation and mass displacement. The so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has taken control of large swaths of the country and continues to threaten religious minorities -- including Christians, Shia Muslims, Yazidis and Turkmen -- who have been singled out for attack.

It’s estimated that upwards of 10 million people in Iraq are in urgent need of humanitarian aid; that number is expected to grow as people flee newly-liberated areas.

CRS Response

With offices in Dohuk, Erbil, Kirkuk and Baghdad, CRS and our local Church partner Caritas Iraq have jointly helped more than 150,000 displaced Iraqis with:

  • Shelter
  • Water and sanitation facilities
  • Food and emergency living supplies
  • Education, counseling, and support for children
