Olive Nakoto, a 40-year-old mother of 8, poses for a photograh with a coffee tree in Kaleere village, Ddwaniro subcounty, Rakai district, Uganda, January 29, 2019. Rose was identified as the head of vulnerable household because her husband, whom she shared with her neighbor Beatrice Nakimbugwe, died of AIDS in 2003. She has been selected for support through the Sustainable Outcomes for Children and Youth (SOCY) project in Central and Western Uganda and has received training on how to grow coffee and sell through a cooperative to earn better profits. The US$45-million PEPFAR- and USAID-funded project aims to improve the health, nutrition, education, and psychosocial wellbeing of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and youth, as well as reduce abuse, exploitation, and neglect among this population. To increase resilience and make families less susceptible to shocks, SOCY provides multiple levels of household economic support, depending on each family’s level of vulnerability. SOCY provides critically vulnerable households with access to cash transfers for temporary support. Less vulnerable households, but those that are ready to build assets, are assisted in forming savings and internal lending communities (SILC). SOCY also engages these households in child-centered financial education, to ensure that vulnerable children’s needs are prioritized in the household budget. For the last tier, SOCY facilitates market linkages for households that are ready to grow their income and assets. In addition, SOCY provides youth business apprenticeships and trainings to grow and market high-value crops. Across all households, SOCY provides Better Parenting sessions for caregivers, communication counseling for couples, and social and financial skills training for youth. Olive is also in a SILC group. SILC is a holistic, savings-led microfinance approach that provides a safe place for poor households to save and borrow to increase their income. Send an email today and urge your legislators to demonstrate U.S. leadership in addressing the impacts of climate change on people around the world.

Across the globe, severe weather events—like droughts, storms or flooding—are disproportionately impacting communities experiencing poverty and vulnerability.

Farmers’ crops are damaged. Homes are destroyed. Livelihoods are ruined. Families who already lack the basic resources to recover from these setbacks find it difficult to earn an income or feed their children.

The U.S. government must take bold action by advancing in global leadership on climate policies and commitments that will help communities around the world recover, adapt and build resilience for the future.

All our leaders—regardless of party—must come together to support bold climate policy moving forward that represents both the ‘cry of the earth’ and the ‘cry of the poor’.

We need YOUR VOICE! As a constituent, YOU are key to influencing Congress on climate policies that promote justice and support vulnerable communities most impacted by climate change. Thank you for supporting our global family!
