Mary Nyanjok Puoch, a 35-year-old mother of six, poses for a portrait at her home outside Bor town, in Jonglei State, South Sudan, April 8, 2019. Mary’s husband died of an illness 5 years ago, leaving her with no means of income. “At first I was facing a lot of difficulties because no one was taking care of me. This area does not support agriculture activities. It floods when it rains.” In 2016, she received three goats from Catholic Relief Services (CRS) through a livestock restocking initiative that is part of CRS' Resilience and Food Security Program (RFSP). The RFSP is a food security and livelihoods program funded by USAID Food for Peace in six counties of Greater Jonglei State. Among a host of other initiatives aimed at building resilience, the program identifies vulnerable women like Mary, who are given three goats which can provide milk, and help generate income down the road. After a year, the women “pay forward” the gift by providing another vulnerable woman in the community with three goats. Since 2016, Mary has paid pack the three goats (in 2017) by giving them to a second level beneficiary. She has also grown her own herd to 17 goats. “I didn’t have any income before,” said Mary. “The village chief identified me to CRS because I was vulnerable, I was a widow. So that is how CRS came to know me. The agreement was that after a year ended I would pay back the three goats.” “I am very happy because after paying back the three goats I was left with a good number of goats and was able to trade some,” said Mary, explaining that she traded ten goats for a small bull calf. “When the bull is of a certain age it can be exchanged for a heifer.” “I milk the goats and give the milk to my children. To have income to support my family now I can sell a goat,” said Mary. In November 2018, she sold three goats and used the money to buy clothes and food for her children. “These goats will help me economically. They also prov
Mary participated in a non-emergency Food for Peace development program that helped her build a secure livelihood and provide food for her family.

Let your voice be heard on global hunger! Tell your U.S. senators you care deeply about our global family members facing food insecurity.

Food for Peace is an international hunger-reducing program in the Farm Bill that provides lifesaving food aid during emergencies. In addition, its long-term development programs address the root causes of hunger and help communities lift themselves out of poverty.

But Food for Peace programs that prevent hunger are in jeopardy.

The House Farm Bill includes elements of a bill called the American Farmers Feed the World Act. Provisions in the AFFWA could make Food for Peace long-term development programs inoperable and could reach 2.3 million fewer people with support.

The Senate Farm Bill proposal does not currently include the AFFWA, but there is still a risk that it could get added in as the Farm Bill legislative process continues to unfold.

Tell your senators to oppose the inclusion of the American Farmers Feed the World Act in the Farm Bill and protect international hunger-reducing programs.

This is a key moment to act. Legislative action on the Farm Bill may move quickly in the coming weeks. By lifting your voice at this crucial time, you can make a big difference for our sisters and brothers who are facing severe hunger. Research shows that constituents’ voices have significant influence on congressional members’ decision-making, especially when communications are personalized—like sharing a story or demonstrating the impact an issue will have in the district or state.
