An 'Earthquake Song' for Indonesian Children

By Laura Sheahen

In earthquake-prone Indonesia, Catholic Relief Services and our local partners work to help rural communities prepare for the worst. Villagers learn about basic earthquake safety, including securing cabinets, putting loose objects away and keeping exits clear.

Trainers also teach children an "earthquake song." In this audio slideshow, Robert Sulistyo, disaster risk reduction specialist for Caritas Indonesia, sings the song. The photos are of quake-affected communities in southern Java. They are all by Laura Sheahen/CRS

If there is an earthquake,
protect your head.

If there is an earthquake,
stay away from glass.

If there is an earthquake,
run outside to open space.

If there is an earthquake,
do all these things!
