China's HIV and AIDS epidemic is one of the fastest growing in the world. In 2005, the Chinese government, along with the World Health Organization and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, estimated that approximately 650,000 people are currently living with HIV in China. The epidemic is spreading from high-risk groups to the general population, with the potential risk that it will spread further. Experts fear that the number of people living with HIV in China could reach 10 million by 2010 if the epidemic is left unchecked.
Catholic Relief Services is responding by supporting mainland partners' efforts to deliver effective HIV and AIDS prevention and care programs in their communities.
Since 2004, CRS has supported the development of the emerging social service sector in China, with a particular focus on providing care and support services for people living with HIV and their families, and implementing prevention programs that focus on stigma reduction.
