The Central African Republic (CAR) is an often forgotten, unstable country in the interior region of Africa. Its history is marked with violence and extreme poverty. Catholic Relief Services is helping meet the basic needs of the population while working for lasting peace.
As a result of recurring instability, intermittent conflict and a recent coup d'état, many Central Africans have fled their homes and farms and are now highly vulnerable. In the most war-affected areas, health care facilities have been looted or destroyed and the distribution systems for food, medicines and other critical supplies have been disrupted. This situation has left the majority of Central Africans extremely susceptible to hunger and disease.
