CRS in Cambodia

The Rewards of Committment

Vanna first worked as a Credit Agent for a CRS partner four years ago. Since then, he has seen the CRS Microfinance Program evolve from operating solely in partnership with other organizations, into a registered, licensed, private microfinance institution called Thaneakea Phum (Cambodia) Ltd., or "TPC". With it, Vanna's responsibilities have also grown.

He was promoted to Branch Manager at Banteay Meanchey Branch Office two years ago. He is responsible for supporting the Credit Agents, checking documentation, and monitoring the financial status of the branch. He also visits clients in the field in order to better understand their needs.

Vanna enjoys his work because TPC values and rewards his ability and commitment to the program, and provides opportunities for him to continue to grow professionally. However, there is another dimension: "Most of all, I believe that CRS Thaneakea Phum is helping the people of Banteay Meanchey by giving people the opportunity to increase their capital and also their income with the Savings and Credit program".

Vanna describes some of the benefits that people receive from the program as increased quality of living, capacity building and empowerment of clients, and positive changes in society. He explains that before 1999, poor villagers could not borrow money from finance institutions because they did not possess any assets as guarantee for their loan. The only option was to borrow from a moneylender and pay10-20% interest per month. Now because money lenders are loosing their clients, particularly in Banteay Meanchey province, they have decreased their interest rate to 5-10% per month with no collateral. The result is more options and a more just situation for poor people. Added Vanna, "Local authorities are cooperating with TPC because they believe that we help in the development of Cambodia."
