The temporary refugee camp in Fererio, northern Burkina Faso, is about 30 miles from the Malian border. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, more than 65,000 refugees have fled rebel violence in Mali for Burkina Faso since January 2012. Many thousands more are in neighboring countries.
Burkina Faso—along with other countries in the Sahel—is already facing a severe food crisis after rains failed, food prices rose and instability in the region limited migrant work. Catholic Relief Services is helping refugees cope with this worsening emergency through food distributions and by offering water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.
